  • "Libertarian Socialism" is like "Benevolent Maoism" - Irreconcilable. Dude seemed well read, but I don't know how you can combine the idea of "You do you and I'll do me" with "The government should control everything." He's young and utopian, but he was a good sport.

  • This is so cute. Remember when you had zero experience running anything including your own life and you naively thought your ideas were: (a.) unique enough to be impressive to older, more worldly individuals, (b.) based on people being smart enough to make governing decisions for publically traded companies when they aren't and (c.) incorrectly formulated upon the assumption that these same people want to have that weight of responsibility foisted upon them by a snot-nosed, college egghead who has even less real-world experience than they have! This idea is about as original as your haircut, Kid n Play! This young man is in for a BIG surprise if this Marxist bullshite is ever instituted where he lives. At least he can vote for it once prior to his voting for it every time after when the secret police "escorts" everyone to the polls. For their own safety, of course! Bernie is a commie millionaire, kid. That is called being soaked in hybrid and remember this as a final point; the only place where everything works in a communist society is the government.

  • I can see where the kid is coming from about workers deserving a say. Many workplaces overwork them or limit their environmental health. All for profit. Some cases are bout greed, while others are about economic/government difficulties. It would be hard to balance out the power distribution because of investments of money and time vs the people who have to deal with the conditions.

  • Socialism is against Christianity, ultimately. Even the Ten Commandments assume an ability to own or be the steward of resources. When someone infringes upon your territory and removes your possessions (even foe the sake of “equality”) that person is rightly called a thief! “You shall not steal!” And if someone has more than you, build a bridge and get over it! “You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.”

  • I think the guy would change his ideas if he started his own business. The thing is, is that the labor part of a company is easy to find people to do.

    John C.John C.Vor 3 Stunden
  • What Geoffrey here doesn't understand is in most places the worker does have much of a say in what impacts their area of work. It's called a business model with infrastructure, protocols, procedures. The infrastructure allows for teams to be devised by the workers to promote better safety, ergonomics, all things that Jeff Bezos won't be on the floor commanding and dictating how or where certain jobs should be done. Those responsibilities are shared by the worker. And if larger plans are in the works that impact your area and you've worked there for a decent amount of time and have shown to be a respectful listener, with some intelligence and a drive and passion that lines up with the owners' and business models' vision, you may have a part and a say in what happens in those future plans... the plans that impact you're area of expertise. Now there are other areas of the business that may have to do with, oh, let's say, how to obtain a government contract for future business, or how to go about obtaining certain customers, and maybe which customers you know you shouldn't deal with. Now, a guy off the street who has been there for 5 years may know quite a bit about a certain product the company sells, and how it's made, but their area of expertise may not allow them to know a product's full capabilities, it's pros and cons in its' variety of applications, etc. That's an area that a sales person, or maybe in a small company, the owner is the sales person, would have that knowledge and be able to determine the direction the company is going to be steered in to bid on the contract that this certain customer is holder of. As that owner that you see at 8 am is doing all kinds of office stuff, on the phone constantly, or e-mailing, or in meeting after meeting, what you don't see is when they take the same customer to dinner at 9 pm that night, wining and dining them, but mostly to get more on a personal level with the customer to give them the real picture that these are family people and their employees that they met earlier that day are apart of that family. Those people that own that company, and took their live savings, drained their 401Ks from their previous jobs, to build this company, and will never miss a paycheck paying their employees on time, even if the business fails. If it fails, the employees don't sit and cry with them at the lawyer's office while filing their first bankruptcy, they get laid off, sit at home and draw unemployment, or get off their butts and get another job. Point is, an employee has power over the areas that impact them and wouldn't dare live the lifestyle of 18-20 hour days for decades to make something work, and each person hired has an area of expertise, where some are closer to the driver's seat based on their education and experience.

  • For all the $15hr min wage people please go to your local walmart and look at what is going on. Walmart has been pushing for $15hr min wage. They are not doing this to help out their workers they are doing it to shut down the little mom and pop shops for good. There are 4 walmarts with-in 20min of my house and all 4 have moved to self check-out. Now they are paying 2 cashiers to watch over 30 self check-outs vs having 8-10 registers open. By using the self check-out they did away with 6-8 jobs and probably 12-16 jobs during the holidays. The little mom and pop shops cant afford to pay to retrofit their shops with self check-out or paying cashiers $15min wage. I really dont think there should be any minimum wage. When you work for a company you agree on your hourly rate when you hire on and if you feel like your time and skillset is worth more per hour than you are making you can always leave and work for someone else or ask for a raise.

I wish you would have given this young man more opportunity to finish his thoughts without talking overtop of him. It is not that I agree with him, I agree with you. It is such a rarity to see someone with his viewpoints being so respectful; it would have been good for you to have given him more opportunity to state his positions before trying to point out his weaknesses. Remember the old adage and give him more rope. Bring him back, and have an open, honest, respectful, uninterrupted debate. he might become a regular for you. That way, you would be giving him that "voice" he was talking about giving to "the workers."

Upon being hired they are accepting company policy and to do their duties as given by the owner, foreman, etc. It doesn't work when the employees have the same clout as management, then everyone is boss, or at least think they are. A top heavy business will fail. Like the tooth pick factory worker. "If we weren't here making the tooth picks your business wouldn't succeed." And the owner replies "If i didn't hire you in the first place and provide the technology and machinery for you to make the tooth picks you wouldn't have a paycheck."

I was having a hard time coming up with arguments against it because, in a utopia world where people worked for what they loved and not for money, it might work. But obviously, we live in a fallen world and that won't ever happen. It would just turn corrupt in some form or fashion. So thanks, I'll listen to this video, like three times, and bring up some of these points in class.

  • I hate companies like Apple, having worked for them for nearly a decade, but they have the right to guide their company in the direction that they choose without having to ask for their employees' input. The employee is provided employment at the pleasure, or not, of the owners or leaders of that company. Just because I knew more about the product than most of the company outside of the programmers doesn't mean I made it. It wasn't my intellectual property, I didn't have my name on the patents. I was hired, trained, did my job and collected a pay check. I was given raises based on a schedule and by merit but the company was not beholden to me, I was beholden to them to keep me employed. To presume that you should have a say, that a cog tells the clock how to turn is so arrogant that applied to a company if I were the owner or CEO and was told how to run things and treat people beyond what was required by law and common decency, by the mail room employee. That my employees all 'deserved' a piece of what I'd made beyond the very reasonable aspect of providing a living...no, find another job. If you want a say, build your own company and if you want to be a socialist and build that kind of company structure. Do it, and I'll watch and laugh at how fast it falls apart.

    AxysofAnarchyAxysofAnarchyVor 22 Stunden
    • when applying for employment a worker willingly accepts the terms of employment if hired. they are seeking payment from the owner, ceo, etc. by doing what is requested of them. if everyone is the boss the company becomes top heavy with no working employees, just a bunch of bosses shooting their mouths off.

LibSoc is the original form of libertarianism, in fact. What people often call "libertarianism" today is based on anarcho-capitalism, which is a more recent perversion of the original idea.

But I guarantee you, both of those guys would disavow that strategy the minute some workers made a decision that would ruin their businesses. It is true there’s a LOT of corporate greed right now. And they align themselves with dems because they’re of the same cloth. BUT, that does NOT mean capitalism is bad. It means some dishonest people are taking advantage of it to the extreme. If you come up with a great idea that makes you rich, GREAT!! But don’t turn around and feign support for higher taxes on business when you know you’ll get a break and others won’t. That’s dishonest.

  • People need to understand better the existing system of government. This kids grasp of our political system is nil. This is not entirely his fault. There has been , for more than fifty years , an organized and systematic effort to eliminate entirely from our public education teaching children to think. The elimination from standard curriculum's of civics. The lack of teaching children the constitution , or the bill of rights , most do not even understand that we are not a Democracy. We are a limited Republic. Most couldn't tell you what branch of government is responsible for making laws. The corporation is the problem in this economy. The corporation is not a system that can even exist legally within a constitutional republic. The corporations run this country. They have become oligarchy's that assign handlers to President's to keep an eye on them so they don't cause problems. Do you understand Corporate law? Do you understand they have shut down every constitutional court in this nation? That they have incorporated every square mile of the United States? Do you know that under Corporate law you are not a Human Being? You are a fictitious entity. You have no rights under corporate law. Find a book on Corporate law 101 , they use them to train paralegals. Pick up a book on basic Corporate law and read it. It spells out clearly what this country is. What you are within it's framework of corporate law is a slave. You are not even a citizen. Are corporations run by elected officials? Are they a part of government? Is the Fed a governmental body? Is the IRS a governmental body? These are the "constituents" of you're elected officials. You are not. You have no say about anything. Your opinion is not something a politician is concerned about. You have no influence , therefore , you have no say. Wake up people. This is not conspiracy theory. This is a matter of verifiable public information. It is in black and white and there for anyone to read whenever they are ready to look in the eyes of reality. Most haven't the courage to open their eyes. It is to frightening for them to conceptualize. It is "unthinkable". Pretending it is not so unfortunately , does not make it go away. It is still true. I only hope in my lifetime I am able to witness an awakening in this world , an awakening that will send the bastards scurrying like rats off a sinking ship. The truth is , we the people have the power to end it all right now. All we would have to do is see who the enemy actually is , stand and declare "no more!" But it will not happen , because they are masters of keeping you all pointing and blaming your own kind, divide and conquer. Keep us fighting each other, and they will always win. Black against white , man against women , religion against religion , they are masters of illusion , of misdirection , of deception , of spin. If you cannot see the enemy , you will certainly never defeat the enemy.

All I know is for us to ever get on the right path in terms of a more free society their would be growing pains and set backs. Or we continue down the same path of big government over spending and printing money like theirs no tomorrow and devaluing the dollar faster and faster. If we continue down that path we will have much more economic instability and inflation will just sky rocket even more than it already has. 20 years agro a fully loaded top trim Honda civic was like $19,000 today that fully loaded top trim Honda civic is into the $30,000+ range. This cost of everything is going up like crazy because the value of the dollar is quickly going down.... I'd love to see you have an episode about the debasement of the Dollar brother. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that. Keep up the good work.

  • if workers want a equal say, they better be paying into the investment of the company, and the risks, and lose when things don't go well along with the owners and managers. Otherwise, they are just being greedy, selfish, whiny pains in the asses. Also, democracy is overrated, that's why we created a federal republic.
